The jump captain was dead serious, but he didn’t know much about John’s dedication to his destiny. “You know, “ he shouted, above the howling wind, “You don’t have to do this.”

“What?” screamed John.

“There are lots of alternatives to going into space. NASA has lots of places a blind man would fit in just fine. And for those jobs you don’t have to jump into the ocean.”

“Too late!” screamed John again.

“What?” shouted the captain.

“Geranium!” wailed John, not waiting for the captain to push him out of the airplane door. For a moment John was frightened of falling, but in another moment his adrenalin kicked in and he fell in love with this sensation of flying. It was like he had discovered his sight. Deep within him a new sense took over, and he was touching the rushing air with his feelings, intuition, and spirit. He could see, from the inside. In still another moment his parachute opened, jerked him upwards,and John was floating. Another wonderful sensation! His skin had eyes, and his whole body was looking and investigating life’s colors.
